Haro is a city of La Rioja located between the rivers Ebro and Tirón. It is named The City of the Wine.

Haro was founded around 10th century near Bilibio where there was a castle. In 1117 was donated by the king Alfoso VI of Castille to Diego Lopez, Lord of Vizcaya.

It grew up during Middle Ages because the Kings of Castile, Alfonso VII and Alfonso X, granted privileges by for its support in the war against Aragonese King.

Haro belonged to Trastamara and Fernandez the Velasco families in 14th and 15th centuries.

During the 19th century Haro was involved in the wars of the time, Independence and Succession wars. In 1833 it was established Logroño province and it stopped belonging to Burgos. By the end of this century Haro outstands economically due to multiples industries, the most of them linked with the wine. Its wines and wineries began to be famous in the many countries.
For all this, and acting on Marques de Francos initiative, The Queen Maria Cristina, by royal decree in 1891, conferred the City denomination. As a consequence of this prosperity: in 1841 was inaugurated Breton de los Herreros Theatre, in 1886 bullring, in 1877 it was approved the street lighting project, which was inaugurated in 1890, being together Jerez de la Frontera the first localities, in 1892 Banco de España branch was opened, and the same year it was building the enological station.

When you visit the old nucleus center can admire its palaces as of Bendaña, the Condestables, Bezaras, Tejada, Palace of Saint Felices, the basilic of The Vega, the saint patron of the city, the church of Saint Thomas and the monumental La Paz Square.
In June, the 29th, they celebrate the Battle of the Wine in honour their saint patron Saint Felices.

There are too many wineries, some of them very old. They elaborated the famous wine of Rioja and it’s worth to Know them.
