| One of the wonders of the world. Patrimony of the Humanity. Felipe II ordered to the direction of works of the architect Juan Baptist of Toledo, Madrilenian and disciple of Miguel Angel. He directed the construction from first stone -1563 - to his death -1567-. Juan of Herrera was who, after the death of the previous one, gave impronta to the Monastery, whose basic characteristics is one ~ perfect symmetry ~. This important building surprises so much by its austerity as by the simplicity of its lines. Four solid towers delimit the Monastery in their four angles. In the center the towers of the Basilica dominated by the great cupola are raised. All the set presents a piramidal form according to a very Spanish tendency. In this impressive set, in addition to the church there are three different parts: the school of the Noble, the seminary and the palace. Its Library is the second of the world in importance. |
